Through the Looking Glass: The History and Comeback of Colourful Glassware

At Issy Granger, we believe that even the smallest moments should be filled with beauty - and few things elevate a table, a shelf, or a morning glass of orange juice quite like a piece of colourful glassware! Whether it’s the delicate glow of amber or a vibrant swirl of blue, coloured glass turns the everyday into something to savour.

But this isn’t just a passing trend. The story of coloured glass is centuries old, stretching from ancient civilisations to modern homes - and right into the heart of today’s interiors.

A Colourful Past

Coloured glass has captivated people for millennia. The Egyptians were among the first to add minerals like copper and cobalt to glass over 3,000 years ago, creating bold hues. The Romans carried on the tradition, producing coloured vessels for oils, perfumes, and wine across the empire.

In mediaeval Europe, stained glass brought vivid colour into sacred spaces, and by the Renaissance, Venetian artisans on the island of Murano had turned coloured glass into high art. Their handblown works became symbols of craftsmanship and luxury - qualities that continue to inspire the design world today.

From Royal Tables to Everyday Homes

By the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution introduced advances in glass production, particularly pressed glass, which made decorative and coloured glassware more affordable and widely available across Britain. In the early 20th century, British manufacturers such as Bagley and Davidson became known for their elegant, pastel-toned glassware, designed for everyday domestic use.

The 1920s and ’30s saw the emergence of the Art Deco movement, characterised by bold geometry and vibrant colours. This aesthetic extended to glassware, which adopted rich jewel tones and angular forms. British and European designers embraced these styles, producing glassware that was both functional and visually striking.

Meanwhile, in the United States, “Depression glass” became widespread - an inexpensive, mass-produced coloured glassware that offered a touch of brightness during economically difficult times.

The Modern Revival

By the late 20th century, the design world shifted towards clear glass and minimalism. But recently, colour has come back into our homes, joyful, expressive, and full of character!

At Issy Granger, we’ve seen this renewed love for colour and craftsmanship firsthand. Our glassware is made from borosilicate glass - a high-quality, durable material known for its strength and resistance. Not only does it look beautiful, but it’s also highly functional, ideal for both everyday use and special occasions.

Each piece in our glass collection is handblown by skilled artisans, combining centuries-old techniques with modern, playful designs.

Styling with Colour

You don’t need a perfectly matching set to embrace colourful glassware. In fact, some of the most charming tables mix and match shapes and shades. Start with a few key pieces - perhaps one of our pom tumblers or wine glasses, and build your collection over time.

Mix vintage finds with the new and layer clear glass with bolder colourful hues.

When it comes to care, borosilicate glass is incredibly resilient, but hand-washing will help preserve its brilliance for years to come.

A Toast to Everyday Beauty

Whether you're sipping elderflower cordial in the garden, hosting friends for supper, or just enjoying a quiet moment with a morning iced coffee, a pop of colour in your glass can transform the experience!

At Issy Granger, we’re proud to be part of this vibrant legacy - where timeless craftsmanship meets everyday joy! Shop our collection of colourful glassware now.
